A Bit About Me

Or...for some background on me and how I became a learning specialist....

How I Doubled My Own Learning Speed

I'm from the UK but currently live in Sydney, Australia with my family. I've been hooked on learning all about effective learning since my childhood. At a young age I was lucky enough to come across tools and techniques like mind mapping, memory skills and speed reading. The time and effort these saved me, together with the results they got me was eye-opening, and I wondered why my teachers at school weren't teaching such techniques.

The World's First 'Learning Engineer'

My degree is in Engineering and Business Studies, which I studied at The University of Warwick. I studied Civil Engineering, but rather than designing and building physical bridges, I realised that my passion lay in building 'bridges' within the learning process (because you'll probably agree - there are a lot of 'holes' when it comes to learning).

What Fuelled the Fire: Ineffective Training and Learning

Thanks to my eyes being opened in my childhood, I was constantly questioning various learning processes, systems or learning cultures I came across (in both my University studies and in my early career as a graduate working for large corporations). It was obvious to me that traditionally accepted learning approaches weren't working, for myself or my peers. Traditional training was just forced upon us - it was often clunky, untargeted, failed to connect us to any personal rewards and ineffectively delivered. Eventually, I developed a fire in my belly to change that!

So I set out to combine my engineering mind with my expertise in 'learning' and help businesses to re-engineer their learning systems and create a learning culture that works. And what 'works' must work for every individual in the team or company - it must be embraced by employees, credible, logical, and highly effective, and point directly towards both business objectives and individual rewards.

Excelerated Performance International

So in my mid twenties I set up Excelerated Performance to teach others all I knew about effective learning systems. I started with University students, then University staff and lecturers, and quickly moved into selling my expertise to large corporates and businesses.

Application of Learning is a Huge Challenge to Many

But I realised effective learning itself wasn't enough to help my clients achieve their business results effectively. Individuals struggled to retain, organise and make what they have apparently learned easily accessible and easy to translate into action when required. So I began developing systems to help them do that too.

Productivity

This naturally led me to progress into the field of personal productivity, and now the complete systems I share with clients focus on learning fast, and then translating what's learned to the job fast. Then repeat!

This continuous cycle of effectively 'learning' then 'doing' takes an individual towards their desired rewards fast and of course drives your business results.

The Career:Business 'Win:Win'

When an individuals own career desires (and desired rewards) are aligned with the achievement of their business objectives, and then the individuals are inspired and taught how to drive their own learning and performance towards these faster and more effectively than they've ever done, they become a very powerful asset to any business. And they learn how to get what they want too.

And that's how I work with clients now. Working backwards from their business objectives, I help them determine a people-performance strategy, I help them implement this strategy, and then I help their people to do the same. I help each individual align themselves and drive their learning and performance fast, effectively and enjoyably towards their objectives.

The Great Career Escape (and Other Projects)

My work in the areas of career and business performance also led me to question why some capable people continued to perform poorly in their work. Of course, a major reason is their positioning in their career. If they're a square peg in a round hole, they're unlikely to learn effectively (or purposefully drive their own learning) and unlikely to work productively, no matter what training you put them on!

Since I was passionate about getting myself into my ideal career, I decided to set up an online service (currently free) to help others do the same -->http://thegreatcareerescape.com
